Revelation in Green

It would have been easier if the hungry mud was that of sadness, of desolate grief. A clear enemy to struggle against. Instead it was an incarnation of doldrums, ennui, that vague but viscous malaise that is the bane of so many endeavors. As he trudged through it his psyche raced with excuses and rationalizations not to go on. To turn away from this jungle, to leave the wilds of the Green Sun altogether and return to his House in Indigo. The liquors and sweets of Satyrine called to him, the temptations of his bed - which certainly wouldn't be empty. And of course as Vislae he had a responsibility to the City of Notions, yes? To help the Triumvirate heal the scars of the cysts, to restore the neighborhoods destroyed in the War....

Memories flash, more feeling than sensory. Fear. Anguish. Betrayal? Cowardice? What was the answer to this deep guilt that tormented him on the 2nd day of every month?

A whisper is driven from his lips through exhausted lungs. The forest changes, almost imperceptibly - 17 moths burst out of a rotting capybara corpse 9 miles away. A vine drops from the canopy above, seemingly of its own accord. With what an observer might characterize as impatience the vine pulls him out of the reddish-brown muck, deposits him on the side of the swamp closer to his goal, and then curls itself back up into the tree tops. The man catches his breath, examining himself. His outfit is caked, the clay draping him almost up to his neck. Thankfully the light but steady rain is already washing the mud off the copperhead skins that cloth his frame. Unfortunately one black chitin boot is now surrendered to the mud, revealing an ordinary & now irrevocably beige dress sock. A remnant of his time Shadow.

Memories flash, a cast of characters that apparently were nothing more than chains. He has to constantly remind himself they aren't real.

"Shadows. They were just shadows."

He has to focus on the here and now. He has to uncover the secret he's hidden from himself. What happened to his children during the War?
